Mount Macleod Pinot Noir 2023
2024 had a drier spring than the previous three seasons though heavy January rains contributed to a late fight against downey and powdery mildew. All was saved by a great big heat spike of 39C on January 27th that sealed our victory over mildews for another year. We then had a drier than usual autumn that yielded really clean fruit of excellent concentration with flavours that built languidly over a long dry March. The chardonnay bunches were small but with an excellent flavour spectrum ranging from yellow flowers to dried mango. The pinot noir crop was slightly larger and showed great structure and concentration with small amounts of shrivel creeping in from the dry March. Definitely unusual for us, but it leant the wines an intensity uncharacteristic of South Gippsland generally, but definitely marking 2024 as a vintage with a little more density.
Colour
Mid straw with a green tinge
Nose
The nose is dense with citrus blossom and summer fruits, particularly hard nectarine and mango notes which are quite unusual for our site.
Palate
Fresh and bright with vibrantly concentrated primary fruit and a creamy generosity that is pulled into line by balanced lively acidity
100% Organic
The majority of fruit was harvested between 13.2 and 13.8 baume. Each batch was pressed and lightly settled before being racked to old barrels and concrete fermenters as a cloudy juice. Fermentation was allowed to begin naturally and the barrels then underwent fermentation at there own pace. After fermentation the wine was left on full lees unsulfured. Most vessels began spontaneous malo-lactic fermentation that was allowed to proceed depending on taste. The elevage was short due to a run of tiny vintages, with bottling taking place in September of the year of vintage. The wine is filtered but un-fined.
