Mount Macleod Gruner Veltliner 2024

2024 had a drier spring than the previous three seasons though heavy January rains contributed to a late fight against downey and powdery mildew. All was saved by  a great big  heat spike of 39C on January 27th that sealed our victory over mildews for another year. We then had a drier than usual autumn that yielded really clean fruit of excellent concentration with flavours that built languidly over a long dry March. The chardonnay bunches were small but with an excellent flavour spectrum ranging from yellow flowers to dried mango. The pinot noir crop was slightly larger and showed great structure and concentration with small amounts of shrivel creeping in from the dry March. Definitely unusual for us, but it leant the wines an intensity uncharacteristic of South Gippsland generally, but definitely marking 2024 as a vintage with a little more density.

Colour

Pale clear with a green tinge

Nose

The nose is fine, delicate and pure with aromas of Nashi pear, celery,  parsnip and citrus blossom .

Palate

The palate shows crunchy, fresh acidity interweaving with aromas of lime pulp – leaving the mouth feeling clean and recharged.

The wine making was kept extremely simple. The whole bunches were loaded into the press and the fruit was partially juiced such that the fruit sat soaking for six or so hours. The fruit was then lightly pressed. The juice was settled over two days to get very clean juice and after racking, was innoculated with a pied cuve we had running since harvest. The ferments were run in small stainless vessels to ensure lower temperatures. Towards the end of ferment, the wines were racked to ensure that only the cleanest lees remained. The wine as then lightly sulphured and aged on lees for five months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
